Durango Mountain Resort Ski Vacations
Durango Mountain, which you’ll likely recognize by its formerly known name of Purgatory, features some of the best rated skiing around. As a matter of fact, readers of SKI Magazine continually vote for Durango Mountain as having “#1 Winter Weather.” And as far as snowfall goes, an average of over 21 feet falls on the mountain each year.
Not only does Durango Mountain Resort have some great weather for skiing, you won’t find much in the way of crowds or lift lines here, either, as opposed to some other ski spots in Colorado. The resort even claims that there are only approximately two people per acre on their slopes during operation hours. This makes for some nice open spaces for you and your family to enjoy.
The mountain reaches to a top height of 10,822 feet and has a 2,030 vertical drop. There are eleven lifts, including two surface lifts and nine chair lifts. If you come unequipped, that’s okay; rentals are available for ski as well as snowboarding equipment. If you are a beginner or need a refresher course while you’re there, private and group lessons are also available.
With over 2,500 acres of ski area with 75 various trails, Durango Mountain has much to offer skiers of all levels. Whether you’re a seasoned skier or a beginner hesitant about hopping on the bunny slopes, you will find trails that cater to every level of skiing here - with 23% of the trails being for beginners, 51% for intermediates, and 26% for advanced skiers. Durango Mountain Resort is truly a spot that the skiers of all levels can enjoy. This coupled with the fact that there are generally few in the way of crowds makes it practically a winter wonderland for skiers.
You can find lodging at the resort, or in the town of Durango, which is nearby. If you stay at the resort, we’d recommend that you actually visit the town while you are there. While the town is small, there is much to see and do. You can take a ride on the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, a coal-fired, steam-powered train that will take you through San Juan National Forest to a National Historic Landmark - the old mining town of Silverton, Colorado. You and your family could also just make a visit to the breathtaking San Juan National Forest. You can also visit the beautiful Vallecito Lake or Mesa Verde National Park. Maybe enjoy some boating on El Rio de las Animas Perdidas, A.K.A. The River of Lost Souls, which flows through some amazing canyon scenery. Or simply enjoy the fine dining, art galleries, and shopping in Historic Downtown Durango.
With the gorgeous view, the great weather, and plenty of activities available in and around the resort, Durango Mountain can be a winter paradise for vacationers. There are activities and events both at the resort and in Durango to keep everyone in your family happy. When it comes to family ski vacations, this is one you don’t want to miss!
