Ski Vacations at Solitude Mountain Resort, Utah

If you are looking for the ultimate ski vacation in or around Utah, Solitude Mountain Resort has everything that you could ever want or need in a getaway including great weather, value, and accessibility. Located just 40 minutes from Salt Lake International Airport, this resort is loved for its 500 inches of annual snowfall, but probably even more for the non-existent lift lines and small crowds. This makes the resort quite peaceful, and it has the feel of a quiet little Bavarian village, making it a great place for both fun and relaxation.

During the early 1900’s, the area was full of silver miners, who gave the area its famous name. Today, the area has become a Euro-style village covered with skiers instead of miners. It didn’t take long before people starting recognizing it for its beauty and skiing potential.

The area was a full-fledged skier’s paradise by 1957. But it was Robert Barrett, a man who made his fortune as a uranium miner, who developed it into the cozy, family-friendly resort it is today. He basically started developing the resort because of his frustration over the fact that he was denied restroom privileges at the ski area in Alta – because he was not a guest.

Now a different family owns the resort, but it still has much to offer, including, of course, the spectacular views, and also plenty of room for skiing. The resort has 1,200 acres of skiable area with 63 runs for beginners, intermediate skiers, and experts. There are eight lifts, including seven chair lifts and one surface lift. The top elevation at Solitude Mountain is 10,036 feet, with a vertical drop of 2,048 feet. That’s a nice sized area for skiing, and did I mention that typically there are no lift lines?

As far as finding a place to stay, there are five different lodging options for guests. Once you’re ready to get something to eat, you’ll find fine dining as well as laid-back family dining around the area, too.

If you and your family decide to take a break from skiing, there are lots of other activities and events that take place all throughout the year including ice-skating and Nordic skiing. You can stop by Club Solitude to watch movies on a large screen, or have fun in the game room at the club. It also has hot tubs and an outdoor heated pool. Sometimes, they even have fun, family-oriented events like puppet shows and story telling.

As you can see, Solitude Mountain has much to offer. And while it’s a great destination for families, it also makes for a lovely and relaxing travel spot for couples, groups, and anyone simply wanting to true getaway.

The resort is just up from Big Cottonwood Canyon, and the view is amazing in the peaceful heights of Solitude. In fact, it looks very much like a Thomas Kinkade painting, and one can’t help but wonder if this is where some of his inspiration came from!
